OTHER TYPES OF RESIDENCY


First, the easiest way to get residency approved is to have a relative such as a son or daughter born in CR or to marry a Costa Rican citizen. For this residency (through a Costa Rican citizen that is a relative), it must be a 1st degree relative.

  • Student Visa: The student must enroll in a public or private school in Costa Rica and have diplomas authenticated by the consulate while proving economic resources during the time that the educational period will last.


  • Temporary Work permits or Work Visas for more than one year are granted to Scientists, Professionals, Teachers, Technicians and specialized staff hired by companies or institutions based in Costa Rica.


  • Temporary Work permits or Work Visas for Businessmen and Board members of national and international companies are granted under the following conditions


  • The employing company or institution should provide a document describing :
      1) The functions that the employee will be responsible for

      2) Length of the contract

      3) Salary or wages received

      4) Justification on why they have to employ that particular individual

      5) A police certificate from where the person has lived the past 5 years
      6)A certificate from the CCSS that they are up to date with their employee insurance obligations.
      Temporary work permit General Requirements

      Proof of guaranteed income while in the country (letter from the employer in Costa Rica.
      Confirmation letter from the institution if they are working for a government or international institution.
      Photocopy of front photo page passport and last entry stamp in Costa Rica
      4 passport photographs
      $100 deposit once the permit is approved, if the applicant is applying for permanent residency then the deposit may be waived, deposit is re-funded when the person leaves the country.
      Immigration will approve only those Costa Rican companies which are authorized by immigrations executive council, most of the companies that have been in business for a long time are included.
    Professionals and Technical staff must show their diplomas and certificates and belong to the equivalent of the bar association if applicable.
  • Political Refugee Status

  • Maids must have a job offer, the employer must show economic solvency by a salary certificate or bank statement or a CPA certificate. There is also a $20 deposit, we handle the rest of the paper work.

  • Students
    • 1) Students must have a letter of acceptance from the school.
      2) A letter of guarantee of the student during his stay in Costa Rica showing economic solvency, Salary proof, bank statement or CPA certificate, plus a $100 deposit.

      Student Permits General Requirements

      Must submit information on the reasons for the request and name a sponsor that will accept responsibility for the persons actions while the person is in the country, we certify the letter.
      Sponsor must be a resident of any nationality.
      Four passport size photographs.
      $100 deposit after approval and returned when the applicant leaves the country.
      Proof of sponsors monthly income, which can be a letter from the sponsors employer, CPA certificate etc.
      Photocopy of sponsors id.
      Set of finger prints taken at immigration
      Photocopy of applicants passport picture page and last entry stamp.
      Registration document of the school where the applicant will study.
      All minors should have a certified parents authorization.

  • Medical treatment

    • 1) You must show a medical certificate, indicating the type of sickness, the type of treatment, the duration of the treatment in Costa Rica and show proof of economic solvency for expenses.

    We handle the rest of the paper work.

    All of the above must also have the documents required for regular residency such as birth certificate and police background certificate authenticated by the Consulate of Costa Rica nearest where they were issued.

    Costa Rican Citizenship

    You must live in the country for a total of at lest 7 years which do not have to be continuous.

    People married to a Costa Rican citizen either by birth of naturalization are eligible after 2 years of marriage and living in Costa Rica, divorced couples are also eligible.

    You must prove financial means to live in the country

    A birth certificate which an be the same one used for your residency or a certificate from immigration showing your parents names, age and place of birth.

    Sworn statement of birth (we handle)

    Must take a written test in Spanish and Costa Rican geography and national symbols.
